The owner of the Whyalla Steelworks has confirmed the company is close to finalising a deal for new financing to pay off its debts.

In a statement released yesterday, GFG Alliance chairman Sanjeev Gupta said the company are ‘steadily ramping up production’ to catch up with its creditors and bring steel production back to 100 per cent.

Mr Gupta said he still committed to the city but added that GFG can only be successful if all stakeholders work together.

His statement comes after Premier Peter Malinauskas arrived in Whyalla yesterday, where he is meeting with creditors and local businesses around the monies owed.

Earlier this week, a senior public servant revealed that GFG owes about $15 million in unpaid water bills to SA Water, as well as further unpaid royalties to the state government.

It’s been a challenging few months for the Steelworks, plagued with layoffs from mining contractor Goldings and a shutdown of the facility due to a damaged blast furnace.
