The Whyalla community are banding together tonight to raise money and awareness for youth homelessness. Collaborating with Mission Australia, local community agencies, council and businesses have joined forces to make it happen, giving individuals a safe space to listen to and share experience.

The fundraiser has raised almost $17,000 dollars so far, smashing the initial goal of $10,000

Acting Program Manager for Community Services at Mission Australia, Wenona Waugh, says people feel like they can’t reach out.

“If you see someone struggling, talk to them and help link them with community groups or service providers,” she explains.

“Youth services such as Mission Australia can help point those [in need of help] in the right direction,”

“Mission Australia are fortunate to be part of a dedicated committee of service agencies such as Centacare, headspace, the Whyalla City Council and the wellness centre,”

“We have all worked together to make this sleepout happen and fundraise to support local youth in Whyalla.”

The sleep out will be held tonight in the Ada Ryan Gardens in Whyalla and starts at 6pm. It aims to give people the opportunity to experience what many young people without shelter experience every night.
