Clare Valley winemakers are breathing a sigh of relief this week, with China set to lift tariffs on South Australian wine.

The interim decision was handed down on Tuesday night, 12 March.

Premier Peter Malinauskas says China was Australia’s largest wine export market, valued at $1.1 billion at its peak, before tariffs were imposed in 2020.

“Sometimes when we hear about these sorts of tariff decisions, we lose sight of the fact it has such a real world impact on so many people, Premier Malinauskas says.

“The wine industry employs a lot of people in our state, a lot of small businesses rely upon it.”

The Premier says we’re looking to grow the wine market further.

“What we’ve been able to do during the course of the tariffs being imposed is work with the wine industry to find alternative markets in other countries around the world, particularly other Asian countries.

“When China lifts the tariffs, we want to make sure that we don’t put our eggs back in the one basket again.”
